Enjoy the Hocking Valley via Steam Train

Train enthusiasts and visitors to Entertrainment Junction might not be surprised to learn that Ohio is a great place to learn about and observe trains.

From Cleveland to Cincinnati, Ohio’s access to water and land transportation has made it a central part of America’s trade and our growth from east to west.

Fortunately, these investments in rail that were so important to creating our country’s wealth and expansion are also hard to get rid of. Many of these rail lines are still in use, and some lat abandoned but still in workable shape.

One of these abandoned lines has been restored in Southeast Ohio’s Hocking Valley.

The Hocking Valley Steam Train Special is a volunteer-operated and -funded train housed in Nelsonville Ohio, and it has been delighting visitors and enthralling train aficionados for years.

Ohio’s Only Operating Standard-Gauge Steam Locomotive

Billing itself as the “only operating standard-gauge steam locomotive in Ohio,” the Hocking Valley Steam Train is a terrific special outing for the family. Plan carefully though. This train runs on a very limited schedule, usually twice a month on alternating Saturdays, and planning ahead is advised.

This two-hour out-and-back trip is sure to engage everyone with an interest in trains, beauty in nature, and time together as a family. Tickets cost $25 for adults 13 and up (or $22 with a military or senior citizen discount) and $16 for children ages 3-12. Children under 3 are free to ride on a ticketed customer’s lap.

The Hocking Valley Special also plans unique annual events centered around specific holidays. These include a themed Halloween ride and a New Year’s Eve ride that stops at midnight to usher in the New Year with fireworks.

As you plan you train-themed travel around Ohio and the midwest, be sure to include both Entertrainment Junction and the Hocking Valley Steam Train Special!
