A Train Journey Helps a Friend Remember What Thanksgiving is All About

November 20, 2023

One year for Thanksgiving, my friend Maria went on a cross-country train trip to visit her family. As she settled into her seat, she noticed the diverse group of passengers onboard—families with excited children, elderly couples sharing stories, and solo travelers lost in their books.

Midway through the journey, the train unexpectedly stopped due to mechanical issues, causing a significant delay. Frustration rose among the passengers, many worried about missing their Thanksgiving celebrations.

However, what followed was unexpected. Passengers began to bond, sharing snacks, and engaging in conversations. A man traveling alone started telling jokes, eliciting laughter that filled the otherwise tense atmosphere. Someone began strumming a guitar, and soon, impromptu songs filled the air.

As hours passed, a sense of camaraderie filled the train car.  Strangers exchanged stories and shared their reasons for the journey, finding common ground despite their differences.  Maria found that many people were on their way to visit family and friends as well.  The discussions seemed to show that everyone onboard had a lot to be thankful for.

Eventually, when the train resumed its journey, there was a noticeable change in the mood. The delay had turned into an unforeseen opportunity for connection and warmth amid the holiday rush.

When Maria finally arrived at her destination, she realized that the delay, though inconvenient, had left her with wonderful, shared moments and new friendships.  It was a Thanksgiving journey that was a reminder of what Thanksgiving is all about.
