Picking the train that’s right for you!

If you’ve been to EnterTRAINment Junction  and it has inspired you to get involved in model railroading, you’re in luck! We’ve compiled some tips and tricks for building your own layout so if you’re just getting started, it’s easy!

Before getting started though, you need to determine the amount of space you have available and what your budget is. After doing so you may then determine the scale of train you’d like to work with. Below you can see the different scales and how the sizes compare:

For the real young engineers, wooden train sets allow for imagination, creativity, and lots of fun play. Once you get into real model trains, If you’re shopping for those younger than 8 years of age we would recommend G or O scale train whereas those over 8 might enjoy HO scale.

For young beginners, all you need is a basic train set with a locomotive, a couple of cars, enough track to make a loop, and a transformer (power pack). A lot of times, if you buy what’s called a “starter set,” you get everything you need to get started! You can always add more later… such as buildings, bridges, and trees to make it more realistic as well as more track, sidings, or multiple tracks with switches. It’s easy to get lost in the model railroading world because there’s always something to add to your display!

We recommend adult supervision while constructing the train layout and while your little one is “playing conductor.”
